Make a statement in this soft cotton sweatshirt custom made by us. The Never Forget Collection pays homage to destroyed Black communities like The Sourlands. The Sourlands in New Jersey truly reflects the nickname of The Garden State. Lush with farms and fertile soil, the mountainous region was tended to with dedication by the enslaved Africans who were stolen and sold specifically to develop the hard earth, a skill our ancestors were known for. After working tirelessly and without pay, these Black families were disenfranchised as emancipation left many with two choices, give up the land you worked your whole life, or continue to work under your captors for little to no pay. Those free Black people who managed to retain some residence in the area and continue farming their own land were later disenfranchised by discriminatory and aggressively anti-Black USDA policies which left them with no claim to the land they committed their lives to. After some time, the legacy of the Black farmers who truly founded The Sourlands was lost to the whitewashing of history. The remains of several Black bodies are held at a segregated cemetery forgotten by time until researchers began exposing the history of the town in the last few years. Let us never forget the Black farmers whose gifted hands grew beauty from their pain.
